This past week, we got a chance with Koei Tecmo to try out the Wo Long: Fallen Dyntasy demo first. What they mean is looking forward to welcoming Tokyo Game Show 2022 and gathering feedback to further improve the game. The embargo has been lifted and we can finally share our experience.

Of course, as fans of Souls games, Wolong: Fallen Reigns has been in the spotlight since it was first announced. It’s a game made by Team Ninja, who already has a lot of experience making action games, including Nioh, who has a reputation for being the best soul-like series on the market. But unlike the more typical Japanese ancient theme “Nioh”, Wolong: Fallen Dynasty is a game with the theme of the Battle of the Three Kingdoms, which is very iconic in China.

When we first stepped into the demo, we were immediately greeted with quite a wealth of character customization options, this time with the addition of an option from Elements (Phase) that was the basis of our underlying strength. The five elements of fire, iron, wood, water, and earth each have their own merits and borrow the power of different mythical beasts. In addition to different skill options, character attributes, phases and beasts, at the start of the game you can choose which weapon to master. It’s only temporary, as you can definitely transform your character with different builds as you progress.

When it comes to combat, the first thing to consider is the spirit and morale level. Spirit is a metric that has both negative and positive values, it determines attack power and its negative effects if you fail to stay positive, while morale is closer to a level metric that gives you a clearer idea of which enemies are safe to fight or stronger than your character. In terms of control, we still feel similar to Nioh, but the difference is that your character is given super mobility, which greatly increases the fun of the game.

In addition, you can master several special techniques to maximize your skills, such as special self-defense abilities, which can deflect counterattacks with a fatal blow to the enemy. Although we don’t want to compare it to other games, some of the changes brought by Wolong do have a bit of a wolf-like feel, including the removal of the stamina system. Of course, that’s actually good news for us, as the increased character mobility and the typical Sekiro parry and counter-attack system is the main part of the gameplay that keeps us very addicted, and that applies to the Wolong feeling as well. Even better than the King.

Higher character mobility also affects various other aspects of the game, such as level exploration and skill against specific enemies. After mastering all the mechanics introduced and some of the mechanics that souls fans are sure to be familiar with, we finally reached the end of the demo in a fierce battle with Zhang Liang. According to the tradition of most humanoid bosses in this game, the battle can be easy or difficult, and it can be said that Zhang Liang belongs to the second category. His attack pattern takes time to read, and you’ll continue to be attacked very painfully in the process.

Fortunately, the characters we control have more flexible maneuvers to avoid attacks and play more aggressively, so for those of us who are very used to playing Sekiro, it won’t take long to beat him. After that, we finally finished the demo and must admit to being very pleased with what Team Ninja has produced here. The variety of changes to the game system that made him feel familiar with Sekiro is really appreciated, especially since, for some reason, we were one of the few who couldn’t enjoy the original Nioh game and the mechanics it offered.

If you’re curious about the game, Wolong: Fallen Reign itself will be released for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, and PC in early 2023. It’s also safe to say that the game will be available on Xbox Game Pass on day one of launch. You can monitor all the latest developments on their official website here.
