Takahiro Kondo – Director and Producer of Valkyrie Elysium

Q: Valkyrie Elysium is the latest game in the Valkyrie Profile series. Is there any reason to rename from “Profile” to “Elysium”?

apartment: The title marked the beginning of a rebranding of the “Valkyrie” series itself. The name “Valkyrie Elysium” was chosen to denote a new beginning for the series, as it represents the first game in the series that has been around for 14 years and is an iconic part of the RPG genre.

Q: This will be the first Valkyrie game since Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plum, which was released on the Nintendo DS in 2008. What was it like to be able to return to work on the series for so long, and what’s the reason for resurrecting it now?

apartment: Two main factors inspired the development of this game: the positive response to our mobile game VALKYRIE ANATOMIA: The Origin, and the internal decision of the development team to observe and revive some of our popular IPs from the past. The title represents the series’ take on classic roots The return of the narrative focuses on Valkyrie and Einherjar’s story, as well as a gameplay system that prioritizes fighting Einherjar.

Q: We have already learned a little about the skills and gameplay mechanics of “Valkyrie Valkyrie”, so how influential and useful is the divine painting? So does the player have to master it in battle too?

apartment: The main game mechanics of the Valkyrie series are the combat cooperation with Einherjar and the use of various combinations to perform powerful attacks (Art). The gameplay has been developed in such a way that the player’s cooperation with Einherjar is maximized by increasing combos, which in turn allows the player to utilize more magical spells. Another new feature added is that when the new Ein Hegar is summoned, the same elemental type of magic will also be activated.

Q: This will also be the first Valkyrie game to be packaged in a 3D action RPG format. Are there any challenges in transforming a unique collection with a 2D side scrolling format into a new, more modern form?

apartment: The game’s combat system was developed after the previous Valkyrie series. Wlysium’s most notable difference is that everything happens in real-time, and it also adds elements of 3D combat, including aerial combos linked to the Soul Chain. Of course, it was a challenge for us to balance these new elements with the traditional combat system that the series is firmly attached to.

Q: We noticed that the Einherjar from the previous game was also brought back. Will players see other classic aspects in Elysium?

apartment: Yes. If you look at the game screen, you will notice that in addition to Einherjar, your character has a Combo Gauge and Art triggered by it. Each enemy has weaknesses against certain elements, and having a good understanding of each enemy’s profile will give you an edge in every battle. The names of the various divine spells are based on the old Valkyrie series, and I’m sure fans will notice these references firsthand.

Well, that’s the summary of our interview with Takahiro Kondo. We would also like to thank Bandai Namco Entertainment Asia for their help during the interview process.
