News: Hacking group holds Costa Rica health system hostage for $5M in Bitcoin

The more widespread the Internet, the more versatile it is. But unfortunately, the same thing happens with cyber terrorism. Last Tuesday, a hacker group called Hive hijacked the Costa Rican nation’s health system and demanded $5 million in bitcoin if Costa Rica wanted the health system to survive.

Costa Rica itself immediately shut down its health system to buy time, but the move was not without risk, with thousands of people in need of medical attention having to give up.

The attack itself is not the only cyberattack on Costa Rica so far, with at least 30 of the 1,500 servers used by the social security agency reportedly infected with ransomware.

Unfortunately, neither Hive nor the Costa Rican government have confirmed this.
